UK PM says it is 'clear' Russia interfered with Brexit vote
The prime minister has said it is now 'clear' that Russia meddled in the Brexit referendum, reopening one of the most bitter arguments in modern British politics.

Britain's prime minister has said it is 'clear' that Russia interfered with the Brexit referendum, the strongest statement yet by a UK leader on a question that has hung over the country's politics for a decade.
The claim goes to the heart of the 2016 vote that took Britain out of the European Union. Campaigners on the Remain side have long argued that Russian social-media operations and online disinformation worked to inflame divisions during the campaign, but successive governments stopped short of saying that interference definitely took place — a caution the prime minister has now abandoned.
A long-awaited parliamentary report on Russia, published in 2020, criticised ministers for failing to investigate the question properly and said the intelligence agencies had never been asked to look for evidence of meddling in the referendum. That absence of an inquiry has frustrated critics ever since, and the prime minister's words will now fuel fresh demands for a full public investigation.
Moscow has repeatedly denied interfering in Western elections, dismissing such claims as Russophobia. Even so, the statement marks a turning point in how Britain talks about its most consequential modern vote — and it is likely to sharpen calls for tougher laws on foreign influence, money and manipulation in online political campaigning.
Politically, the intervention cuts both ways. Those who campaigned to leave the EU insist the result reflected the genuine will of British voters and resent any suggestion that it was made in Moscow. But the prime minister's choice of words — not 'possible' or 'alleged', but 'clear' — suggests the government believes the evidence has reached a point where denial is no longer credible, and that conclusion will be debated fiercely in the weeks ahead.
